There are a range of lighting options available on the Australian market, conventional incandescent bulbs, compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), halogen bulbs and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Out of all of these options, LEDs are an excellent choice for the average homeowner and consumer.
If you’re still using conventional incandescent bulbs or fluorescent lights in your home, it’s time to learn about the benefits of LED lights.
1. They last longer
When it comes to durability, LED lights are the best. While LED lights may be more expensive than their competitors, they last far longer. An average LED light can be used for up to 200,000 hours, making these bulbs a sound investment.
An LED light lasts up to 25 times longer than a halogen or incandescent bulb, and three times longer than a fluorescent bulb. As a result, you’ll need to change bulbs less frequently and need to buy replacements less often.
2. They are enormously energy-efficient
While being longer lasting, LED bulbs are also the more energy-efficient lighting choice. For instance, LED lights use 80% less energy than incandescent lights.
LED lights are also better at converting energy to light than other bulbs. Where other bulbs typically only convert 10% of the energy into light, turning the remaining 90% into heat, LED lights convert 95% of the energy into light.
Along with better energy conversion, your LED bulbs may also mean you need to use less home-cooling equipment as the room doesn’t heat up because of lighting. Reducing heat via light is important in many workplaces also, including restaurants, theatres and manufacturing factories.
3. They are environmentally friendly
Because LED lights are energy efficient, they’re already environmentally friendly. However, they are environmentally friendly in other ways too. For instance, as they do not need to be replaced as often, they do not contribute to landfill as much as other lighting choices. Similarly, less energy is expended in manufacturing and exporting them as the demand is smaller as they last longer.
Further, LED lights do not contain mercury, unlike fluorescent bulbs.
4. They are focused
LED lighting can focus light in one direction at time. This can allow you to focus lighting for your own purposes, like highlighting decorative features in your home or lighting up a workspace. Conversely, incandescent bulbs throw light at all angles, making directing that light difficult. This can make it harder to partially light spaces.
5. They are money savers
Since LED lights are so energy efficient, you actually save money when you make the switch from conventional light bulbs. And as they’re durable, you’ll need to spend less on replacing them. Overall, while they may be expensive at first to purchase, you will save money in the long run.
6. They have an array of colour temperatures
Using LED lights means you also have a greater range of colour temperatures to choose from. This can help reduce eye strain, as well as create an atmosphere in the room. With conventional bulbs, it can be difficult to match warm yellows or cool whites between bulbs.
7. They work spontaneously
LED lights will turn on instantly rather than taking time to warm up. Traditional bulbs may take a few minutes to reach their full output and switching them off repeatedly can reduce their lifespan. However, this isn’t a problem for LED bulbs.
8. They can work on low-voltage power
In many cases, an LED light can operate at low voltages. This feature makes them an ideal fit for outdoor uses, like lighting gardens or even using in camping lights.
9. They have dimming capability
LED lights can also be easily dimmed, unlike incandescent bulbs which may need additional or equipment or change in colour when dimmed. This is because LED lights can operate at any percentage of their rated power (from 0–100%). As a result, you can dim them to get better energy-efficiency gains and extend their lifespan, as well as to create an atmosphere or achieve the level of lighting you want.
