Measuring Your Windows For Blinds

Measuring Windows Blinds

One of the best ways to control light, maintain privacy and enhance your interiors is by adding window treatments. Whether you prefer to have roller blinds, shutters or curtains, they elevate your home’s décor by standing as a functional and aesthetic element.

So, if you have decided to install new blinds, you first have to take accurate measurements. Measuring your windows properly is an important step so that you have a perfect fit and seamless installation process.

Below is a simple guide to help you take the measurements like a pro:

Things to consider beforehand

Measuring the windows does not mean taking the reading of only your window. You will install blinds at a level higher than the window height and the same goes for width. So, there are a few things you need to consider beforehand:

  • Consider how the blinds will fit – Do you want them to be fit or wavy?
  • Understand the sizing of your windows – How much area around the window do you want to cover with blinds?
  • What surface will the blinds attach to – the surface or the area around the window where your blinds are attached?
  • Finally, do you want to install manual or motorised blinds for your window? Accordingly, the measurements tend to change.

Things you need:

It’s essential to collect all the measuring tools before you start the work, they are:

  • Steel measuring tape
  • Notepad and pen for taking down measurements
  • Ladder if you are measuring for tall windows
  • A partner or helper to assist you with the process (optional)

Different types of setups:

Understand what kind of setup you want. Is it inside mount or outside mount? It determines how and where your blinds will be installed:

  • Outside the frame

If you want to block out more light or have shallow windows, then you will choose the outside mount where the blinds will cover the frame entirely.

  • Outside a frameless window

If the window doesn’t have a frame, then you would have to measure a bit outside the frame.

  • Inside the frame

If you want a sleek, built-in look, the blinds will fit inside the frame and you have to take the measurements accordingly. It is ideal for the windows if they have a frame deep enough to accommodate the binds.

General steps to take the measurements:

  • Measure the width: always measure the width of the window in three places – top, middle and bottom. And always record the smallest measurement which will ensure the blinds will fit snugly within the frame.
  • Measure the drop: like the width, measure the height in three places, left, centre, and right. And record the longest measurement that takes full coverage of the window.
  • Check the depth: always measure the depth so that it meets the minimum requirement for inside mount binds. When you look at the product specifications, you will have this information.

Double-check the measurements

It’s better to measure twice to ensure accuracy. When installing blinds, you don’t want to make even a tiny mistake as it compromises the shape of the blinds. Always note them in width * height so that you know how you are buying them, cutting them and installing them.

Always check the manufacturer’s guidelines

Remember that all blinds have specific measurement requirements. Always check the manufacturer’s recommendation for any additional instructions such as to add allowances for brackets or headrails.

Tips you need to remember while taking measurements:

  • Always use a steep tape measure to take accurate measurements
  • When you are measuring multiple windows, you need to assign a label to avoid mix-ups
  • Also, don’t forget to consider handles, locks, and other protrusions that get in the way of the blinds.
Final Thoughts

Measuring windows may seem like a huge task, however, with the right tools and correct planning, you can take accurate measurements and have the blinds perfectly installed. Take your time in taking measurements so they fit perfectly, function smoothly and look wonderful in your home. Once you have the measurements, you are ready to shop for the blinds and decorate your home however you want.
